Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite times of the year to do arts and crafts with kids. Things are finally settling down after the holidays and kids are ready for more fun with the colors of the February month - red, pink and white! Valentine’s Day arts and crafts for kids will bring some smiles to the sometimes dreary winter month.
Valentine’s Day Hearts - Snowflake Hearts for Your Valentine
Try making some snowflake hearts out of simple white paper using a pair of scissors. Small children may need some supervision in using a blunt tipped pair of scissors. Take a standard piece of 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch paper and fold it in half. Draw a half heart with a pencil and cut it out.
Leave the heart folded in half, and then fold it again a couple of times. Have the kids cut small triangles, slits and other shapes out of the folded heart. Then open it up to see the unique snowflake hearts! They can be decorated with glitter and hung on windows, doors or the refrigerator!
Model Magic Heart Necklace
Make a model magic necklace shaped like a Valentine’s Day heart for mom, teacher or friend. Take white Crayola model magic clay or other, air drying modeling clay and shape it like a heart by hand. Alternatively, you can use a plastic cookie cutter to cut a perfect heart out of the 1/2 inch-thick, flattened clay. Before the model magic dries, use a pencil tip to place small holes in the two top bumps of the heart.
After the clay dries, children can paint the heart with a craft paintbrush and nontoxic paints in various colors. Let paint dry on the front of the heart, and then flip it over and paint the back. Once painted and dried, use a ribbon or piece of yarn and thread through the holes on top of the heart. Tie into a knot and give your beautiful heart necklace to someone you love.
