Sandpaper Art - A Unique Indoor Craft

Sand Art Indoor Craft for ChildrenWhen the kids are tired or the day is rainy, arts and crafts are an old standby - a popular and easy indoor activity for children of all ages.  Sometimes however, the little ones may tire of drawing on boring old white pieces of paper.  Swap these out with some handy pieces of sandpaper and make their coloring activity more appealing to their tactile senses!  The texture of the paper also creates unique effects when a child colors on it with crayons.

Collect large pieces of sandpaper in all grains/grits and get the kids started with this creative activity the next time they are looking for a craft to do.  Try using markers, pencils, paints, chalk, and pastels too.

By the way, my daughter tells me that designing sandpaper art is a Native American tradition.   Isn’t it wonderful to learn from our children?  So, for an extra credit idea:  have your kids look online or at a local library for information related to Native American arts and crafts and turn a simple creative activity into an educational one!
