It’s never too soon to teach kids about the concepts of weight, floating and sinking, and states of matter. In this science experiment, kids can create their own snow globes using water, oil, and glitter. With a clear plastic bottle, or a small glass baby food jar, you can also encourage craft-making with recyclable materials.

You can make a simple snow globe using only one liquid, either oil or water, if desired. However, using both oil and water will demonstrate that different liquids can be different densities and this can affect the experiment in interesting ways.

Ingredients for the Snow Globe Science Activity
Clear plastic bottle with cap
Water
Baby oil or mineral oil
Sequins of different shapes
Food coloring to color the water (optional)

How to Make a Snow Globe
1. Add food coloring to water, if desired.
2. Pour water into the clear plastic container to fill it about half way.
3. Add sequins.
4. Pour oil into the container to fill it to about one inch from the top.
5. Cover and shake!

More Science Activities for Kids
With the new snow globe, you can come up with all kinds of questions that will teach kids observation skills, such as:
What happens to the water and oil in the snow globe once it is shaken?
What happens to the liquids when they settle?
Which layer do the sequins settle into?
