We’ve been playing around again with Crayola Model Magic, a great clay product that air dries and doesn’t make a mess! By making several different colored-clay balls, and pressing them to useful items such as containers, my kids are discovering new ways of making wonderful, interesting gifts for their loved ones!

Our latest invention, a clay dot pencil holder, would be a great gift for Mother’s Day (or Father’s Day)! There are so many variations for creating a nifty model magic dot pencil holder. We decided to cover the pencil holder half-way. Here is how we made the pencil holder gift pictured below.

Materials for Magic Dot Pencil Holder
Model Magic modeling clay, in several favorite colors
Plain plastic pencil holder or container (recycle idea: use a clean aluminum can, label removed, no sharp edges)
Liquid fabric glue

How to Make a Pencil Holder With Clay Dots - Great Gift for Father’s Day!
1. Have the little ones make several little balls of clay in assorted colors with Model Magic.
2. Take the clean, plain pencil holder container and place a dot of glue onto the bottom edge, and press one of the clay dots onto the glue spot.
3. Repeat step 2 until you have covered the container.
4. The kids can be creative with their patterns of color and dots!

NOTE: When little fingers create the dots, they may be slightly different shapes and sizes, but that is what makes this gift truly special. However, if you want more uniformly shaped dots, use a cake decorating tip or small, hollow cutting tool to get just the right amount of clay each time.
