My family loves to camp with the kids, but as the days wear on we can certainly appreciate some of the special comforts of home. One of the more delicious amenities that we tend to miss is ice cream. Sure, we could trek down to the camp store and buy a freezer pop, but when it is hot and sticky out, the novelties tend to melt and get really messy! It would be nice to be close to the campsite to wash off the goo before the wind blows sand all in it!
Making ice cream using an ice cream maker, some cream, a little bit of vanilla extract, ice from the cooler, and rock salt is a great way to bond with the family, without the huge mess and added expense of going to the ice cream man every day. If you are adventurous, you can make ice cream using two ziplock bags, one inside the other. Place several tablespoons (5-6) of rock salt and ice to half-full in the outer bag, and the ingredients below in the inner bag, then shake well for several minutes. Take turns with the kids and enjoy the delicious, cold treat.
Homemade ice cream ingredients
1 cup of cold milk or half-and-half cream
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
2 tablespoons Hershey’s chocolate syrup (optional)
This is a great alternative to roasted marshmallows or s’mores! Enjoy!
