Kid friendly recipes are a great way to cook with kids in the kitchen.  They can also be quite educational.  Enhance your preschooler’s counting skills with this yummy, healthy tropical fruit salad treat.

To start with, precut several different fruits and place them into baggies or plastic bowls.  Have the kids add the fruits in tens to a large serving bowl, mix, and chill before serving.    Below are the possible ingredients for your educational tropical fruit salad.

Ingredients

  • 10 strawberries, halved
  • 10 green grapes, halved
  • 1 banana sliced into 10 chunks
  • 10 good size pieces of watermelon
  • 10 good size pieces of cantaloupe
  • 10 good size pieces of honeydew melon
  • 20 blueberries
  • 20 small wedges canned mandarin oranges with juice
  • 1 kiwi fruit, sliced into 10 pieces
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • juice of 1/2 lime (keeps bananas from browning & adds zip)

Method:

  1. Once all the fruit is sliced by an adult (or if the kids are old enough, have them use a dull butter knife or child’s safety knife to cut the bananas and softer fruits), split it up into tens and dole them out to the kids.
  2. Have the children take turns adding 10 pieces of fruit each to the bowl, helping them to count by tens as they go.
  3. Squeeze 1/2 lime into the bowl of fruit and mix well.  Sprinkle with 1/2 cup shredded coconut to finish.
  4. Chill the salad for 1/2 hour and enjoy!  Serve with vanilla yogurt or whipped cream if desired.
