A quick and simple St. Patrick’s Day craft that you can do with your little one is a shamrock bird.   Here are the steps for creating an aviary of green St. Patrick’s Day birds to decorate the house or classroom.

Step 1 - Find a Shamrock

There are many shamrock coloring pages online for St. Patrick’s Day.  One of my favorite sites for finding free St. Patrick’s Day coloring for kids is at First-School.  Here you can find a simple shamrock that can be colored and used to make your shamrock birds.

Color a ShamrockStep 2 - Color the Shamrock

Have your little ones color their shamrocks.  Do they have to be green?  No!  Try different colors, make a rainbow-colored shamrock, or a whole bunch of shamrocks, each in a different rainbow color!  Don’t forget to color both sides of the shamrock too.

Cut and Fold ShamrockStep 3 - Cut and Fold the Shamrock

Cut the shamrock out around its outline.  This is a good activity for children developing their fine motor skills.  For younger children (toddlers or early preschoolers) you may want to help them cut it out so that it folds properly.  Once cut, fold the shamrock in half lengthwise, keeping the stem as unfolded as possible.  This will be the tail.  Then, fold down the side leaves (wings).

Tape the Shamrock into a BirdStep 4 - Glue or Tape the Shamrock into a Bird

Place dots of glue or tape in the main fold to hold the shamrock together.

Step 5 - Add Details and Hang the Shamrock Bird

Have children add eyes, glitter, and other fun details to their shamrock birds.  Then using needle and white thread, an adult (parent, teacher) can stitch through the two front wings in the center of the bird and create a hanging masterpiece!  Oh, and guess what?  My kids tested it, and it can fly!
